Medical Marijuana, a Cure for Bladder & Pelvic Pain

There are having been hot debates and discussions in the USA about the use of medical marijuana. Due the common and often ugly image of drug addicts smoking marijuana joints, it’s tempting to think of marijuana as just a street drug. Yet, if such a bad image is removed from the American psyche and replaced with that of a medication that reduces pain with far fewer side effects than other pain conventional medications, marijuana will be better received. However patients suffering with IC (Interstitial cystitis have been responding positively about the use of medical marijuana as treatment for this disease and have added that the effects may depend on the strain and method of delivery.

What is bladder and pelvic pain?

Interstitial cystitis, also referred to as painful bladder syndrome, is a chronic condition which results to feelings of pain and pressure in the bladder. This implies that it triggers bladder pressure, bladder pain and sometimes pelvic pain. It can range from mild discomfort to severe pain and is a part of a spectrum of diseases referred to as painful bladder syndrome. Interstitial cystitis affects mostly women and can have a long-lasting impact on quality of their health life. There’s no cure, but conventional medications and other therapies offer relief. Research has also proven that marijuana can also act as a relief.  Unlike urinary tract infections, bacterial infection is not responsible for interstitial cystitis, implying that antibiotics are of no help. Owing to the fact that there is no known conventional cure for the disease, there are, however, some options available for those who desire to relieve their chronic and painful symptoms. One of such beneficial and natural options is medicinal marijuana.

The symptoms of interstitial cystitis differ from person to person. The symptoms of interstitial cystitis may also vary over time, periodically flaring in response to common causes such as menstruation, sitting for a long time, stress, exercise and sexual activity. Some common symptoms of Interstitial cystitis include: Pain in the pelvis or between the vagina and anus in women, pain between the scrotum and anus in men (perineum), chronic pelvic pain, a persistent, urgent need to urinate, frequent urination, often of small amounts, throughout the day and night (at times up to 60 times a day), pain or discomfort while the bladder fills and relief after urinating and pain during sexual intercourse.

How is medical marijuana helpful in the treatment of interstitial cystitis?

A  Spring 2010 legislative research carried out   by the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research published the outcome  of five scientific clinical tests   showing that that marijuana can be helpful in easing pain in selected syndromes caused by injury or diseases of the nervous system and possibly for painful muscle spasms due to multiple sclerosis. It should be noted that these are not simple guesses made by activist for the legalization of marijuana. But rather they are valid, scientific studies proving that marijuana has the potential of helping pain patients who may have found little relief from traditional medications and other conventional medicines.

Another new research emerged on July 1st, 2010 by the International Anesthesia Research Society (IARS) revealing the pain healing properties of mariuana. They released a report discussing a marijuana derivative (MDA19) that helps to fight neuropathic pain and does not trigger the typical physical and emotional side effects associated marijuana use

As noted in the introduction above, some marijuana companies are developing cannabinoid infused analogues that may be taken in pill form. But, as of now, the most popular method of ingesting marijuana is clearly by smoking it as approximately   97% marijuana users have reported that that’s how they have used it and are still using it. Like cigarette smoke, cannabis smoke has chemical compounds that might irritate the bladder.  However Medical researchers in Europe and America are currently testing a new, more promising ways to ingest r marijuana through an inhaled vapor, wax, harsh, oils etc.

The Take Home Message

Isn’t medical marijuana interesting? If medical research is able to extract the medicinal components of marijuana that help patients “get high” while keeping the components that fight pain, wouldn’t that be a credible use of marijuana? Could medicinal marijuana just be the perfect cure for bladder pain? It might be worth considering and trying it if other conventional medicines don’t work
